Piercing Aftercare
How to look after your new piercing ….
Don’t twiddle, spin, or touch your piereing unless you’re cleaning it. Don’t use a pool, hot tub, sauna etc for at
least a week.
You want to be cleaning it twice a day. Only use NeilMed sterile saline spray . Do not use anything else on it
such as tea tree etc its too harsh. Ears first
Firstly wash your hands, then give the piercing a good spray front and back.. Leave a few minutes to soak
any crusties that may be on there. To clean the crusties off your jewellery, use a clean piece of kitchen roll,
gauze, or a cotton bud soaked in NeilMed.
Gently clean the jewellery – clean jewellery = happy piercing. Do not push the post through the piercings to
clean it unless that part is clean – you don’t want to push crusties through the piercing site.
Make sure the skin around your piercing is dry after showering, bathing etc.. you don’t want water to be
sat under the jewel or back of the Labret otherwise is can get sore and cause bumps.
Your bar will be longer to start with to allow for any swelling, and to allow you to clean it better. You will need
a change down in size in about 4-6 weeks. If the bar is left long then there is more chance of the bar moving
and migrating which results on it not healing correctly and it may have to be removed.
Try to not sleep on the piercing, use a donut pillow, or a travel pillow and sit you ear inside the gap. Sleeping
on it can move the piercing especially with a longer bar in.
Oral piercings
Tongues – avoid spicy food, try to eat soft food, ice cream, soup etc Rinse out with water after eating or
smoking. Gently brush the area around the piercing to remove plaque, and use alcohol free mouthwash diluted
with water 50/50. When the swelling has gone down, don’t forget to get your bar downsized.
Lips
Follow the above care for ear piercing, making sure the area around the site is clean and dry. You can rinse
the inside with the diluted mouthwash.
Nose
Your piercing will be a Labret post and a Threadless jewel, use NeilMed side and outside the piercing site. It
helps to breathe down whilst spraying up the nose – you don’t want to snort it ! Put a mirror on a flat surface and
look up your nose when cleaning, use a NeilMed soaked cotton bud to clean any crusties off the bar. You can
downsize the bar after around 4 weeks. Do not change to a ring before 6 months.
For septums soak the jewellery with NeilMed and clean the jewellery of any crusties. Try to hold the ring in place
while cleaning to avoid spinning it.
Nipples
Follow the above general cleaning quide. To start with wear a bra top in bed to minimise movement of the
jewellery.
Navel piercing
Follow the above general aftercare. Avoid wearing waistbands that sit on the piercing. Make sure the area
in and around the navel is dry.
Note: Cartilage piercings occasionally form
lumps commonly known as granulomas.
This is just trapped fluid and can easily be
resolved using the heat and pressure from a
warm water compress once a day, replacing
one of your daily cleanings
